Phenols are brominated in the nucleus by reacting with a bromine/chlorine mixture, the Br:Cl molar ratio being from 1:0.8 to 1:1.2; a catalyst or ultra-violet light may be used additionally. The following are obtained in the examples from the corresponding unbrominated phenols:- (1) and (5) tribromophenol, (2) and (4) tetrabromo-2:2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane, (3) 2:6-dibromo-p-cresol, (6) 2:4:6-tribromophenol-5-carboxylic acid, (7) 2:6-dibromo-4-nitrophenol and (8) dibromononylphenol.
