The arrangement includes a tool holder driven along multiple axes, and an axially spring-biased tool, which is pressed onto the workpiece surface or is driven along it. A distance measuring system (6) records the spring path (5). The course of the workpiece surface at the place of the tool (1) is determined from the spring path and the path traversed by the tool. The tool can be rotated or tilted through a drive. The axis of the tool is arranged in direction of the normal to the workpiece surface in the contact point of the tool. The tool may be a measuring sensor or a marking tool.
