The invention relates to a damping roller for printing presses and to a method for the production thereof, wherein a heat injected microporous special steel coating is applied to a cylindrical base body. The average pore size of said coating is approximately 5 mu m. A thicker moistening agent film is obtained by capillary force thereby enabling a higher moistening agent flow rate in the damping system of an off-set printing press. The size of the micropores is limited in order to avoid dirt contamination of the damping system as a result of carryover and emulsification of printing ink. This enables good printing quality and a stable printing process. The positive surface properties enable the amount of isopropyl alcohol added to the off-set moistening agent to be substantially reduced and provides environmentally-friendly printing conditions.
