Drum varnish comprises a coating component(s), at least one of which can be treated with water, water and a surface active material(s). Preferably the surface active material(s) is an antifoam agent or foam inhibitor, preferably a polyether, e.g. a nonionic polyalkylene glycol ether, a silicon surfactant, e.g. based on polydimethyl siloxane, or a polyether-siloxane copolymer. The varnish also includes a preferably polar organic solvent, preferably from glycols, esters, ethers, pyridines, aromatics and/or heteroaromatics, and a polishing agent, e.g. a wax such as carnauba wax, beeswax, other natural wax, synthetic wax or an ester wax dispersion. The varnish is a 1-component varnish, preferably based on alkyd resin, or a 2-component varnish, e.g. a polyurethane varnish, preferably based on polyester.
