The method of killing insects, mites etc involves placing the items (8) which provide a substrate on which insects etc live are placed in a treatment chamber (12) and the temperature is lowered to below minus 18 deg C and that the temperature is maintained below this point until all the insects etc. are dead. The items are kept in the chamber until such time that the temperature has fallen lower than 18 deg C in all parts of the object. The cooling agent is liquid gas.
