The method involves recording a limited number of random samples of an original noise having various discrete parameter values, such as engine speed, or parameter value combinations. The random samples are digitally stored with their associated parameter values. Noise is generated for given parameter values which may lie outside the range of real parameter values and/or among the discrete parameter values, by continuously evaluated combinations of selected random samples whose parameters are in the neighbourhood of the given parameter values. The continuous evaluation is a function of the difference between the parameter of the selected random sample of original noise and the given parameter value or combination of parameter values. At least some of the selected random samples are subjected to smoothing, change of sampling rate, amplitude or frequency characteristic.
