After successful coupling, the breathing apparatus is secured with a locking device, which is released when uncoupling. The various typical components of a breathing apparatus, such as inhalation and exhalation valves and respiratory tract pressure limiting valves, are integrated into a larger module and are connected to common connectors within the module. The connections between the breathing apparatus and main apparatus are arranged on the side of the breathing apparatus. Coupling is performed using an electric motor in the main apparatus using a step-down gearing having a spindle which screws into a nut on the breathing apparatus.
