<p>Photoluminescent silacyclobutene monomers and silacyclobutene polymers having a repeat unit or formula from structures (I)-(VI) are new. In (I), a = 3-20; R3 and R4 = 2-10C alkyl; and R5 and R6 = aryl. In (II), b = 1-15; c = 2-20; R9 and R10 = 1-10C alkyl or aryl; R11 and R12 = aryl; and R13 and R14 = H or 2-10C alkyl. In (III), R29 and R30 = H or 2-10C alkyl; R31 and R33 = hydroxyl, alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or alkynyl; and R32 and R34 = aryl. In (IV), (V) and (VI), R35, R36, R40 and R41 = 1-10C alkyl or aryl; R37 and R38 = H or 2-10C alkyl; and R39 and R42 = aryl. Also claimed are: (A) a method of making photoluminescent polysilacyclobutenes of formula (I) which comprises polymerising, in a solvent containing sodium metal, a monomer of formula (VII); (B) a method of making photoluminescent polysilacyclobutenes of formula (II) which comprises polymerising, in a solvent containing sodium metal and an aryl alkyl dihalosilane, a monomer of formula (VII); (C) a method of making photoluminescent silacyclobutene monomers of formula (III) which comprises heating and stirring a reaction mixture comprising a halosilacyclobutene of formula (VII), an organolithium reagent and a solvent; (D) a further method of making photoluminescent silacyclobutene monomers of formula (III) which comprises hydrolysing a halosilacyclobutene of formula (VII) in the presence of solvent at 0-25[deg]C; and (E) a method of making photoluminescent spiro-type cyclosiloxy-silacyclobutenes of formula (IV) which comprises condensing a halosilacyclobutene of formula (VII) with a siloxane diol at room temperature. In (VII), R1 and R2 = H or alkoxy; R3 and R4 = H or 2-10C alkyl; and R5 and R6 = aryl.</p> |
