An apparatus for the elimination of nitrogen oxides (NOx) present in exhaust gases from lean burn and diesel IC engines, which is part of the exhaust system of the engine, comprises at least one conversion catalyst (3) in the main line (2), the catalysts having disconnected temperature ranges for which the NOx conversion is lower than a value Cmin, and a unit (4) placed up-stream of the conversion catalysts to entrap and subsequently liberate the NOx. In addition, it comprises a shunt line (5) inside which is the means of entrapment (4), and a valve (6) to distribute the flow of gas between the shunt line and the main line, so that the NOx products can be adsorbed in (4) when the conversion catalysts have a conversion rate lower than the predetermined value Cmin, and so that the oxides can be discharged simultaneously to conversion. Also claimed is a process for elimination of nitrogen oxides.
