An accelerator pedal 1 is pivoted at 2 to the floor of the vehicle and is connected by an arm 3 to a lever 4 which is pivoted at 5 and is connected to a suitable engine control device by a cable 6,7. If operation of the engine throttle is required to be prevented, eg when bus doors are open, compressed air is supplied via line 12 to a force-generating device F in the form of a pneumatic piston-and-cylinder 10,11 which urges the pedal 1 to its position of minimum demand. Because the air in cylinder 10 is compressible, the driver can override the device F with great effort so that the vehicle can be moved in an emergency. In fig.1, the device F is arranged at a suitable point along the extent of the cable 6,7 while in fig.2 the piston rod 11 of the device F is arranged directly below the pedal 1. In a modification (fig.3), the piston rod is connected to a second lever (17) having a recess (19) which receives a spigot (20) on the first lever 4. The invention is applicable to mechanical or electrical transmission of accelerator pedal movements to the engine. |
