The COUP-TFII gene is essential for angiogenesis. The present invention exploits the role of the COUP-TFII receptor in angiogenesis by the selective use of agonists and antagonists to manipulate angiogenesis. Using agonists of COUP-TFII, angiogenesis can be enhanced, making the agonist a suitable treatment for wounds, promoting recovery from skin-graft surgery and organ transplants. Using COUP-TFII antagonists, angiogenesis can be inhibited, which makes it a suitable treatment for tumor inhibition.
