In a cutting system which, during operation, is subjected to various cutting forces, the component of the cutting forces aligned with a primary cutting direction being designated as the primary cutting force component, a cutting tool assembly includes an insert holder (44) integrally formed with at least one insert receiving pocket (46), and an insert (42) adapted to be inserted within the insert receiving pocket (46). For convenience of reference, the insert holder (44) and the insert (42) are referred to generically as "tool components". One of the tool components is formed with a ridge (64), and the other of the tool components is formed with a pair of integral clamping jaws (52) which provide a pair of opposing clamping surfaces (54) for clamping the ridge (64). The clamping jaws are formed to allow elastic displacement so as to generate substantially balanced clamping forces between the clamping surfaces to engage the ridge (64) thereby clamping the tool components together. The clamping surfaces (54) are oriented such that the clamping forces are substantially perpendicular to the primary cutting force component. The jaws (52) may form a self-locking wedge structure, or may be self-closing or mechanically assisted clamping structures.
