<p>An instrument (10) for suturing anatomical tissue with a suture needle (180) includes a housing (12), an elongate shaft (16) having a proximal end mounted by the housing (12) a distal end with a peripheral edge, a first needle holder (18a) protruding from the distal end of the elongate shaft (16) having a needle holding member (112a, 114a) at a distal end operable to grasp, and release a suture needle (180); and a second needle holder (18b) protruding from the distal end of the elongate shaft having a needle holding member (112b, 114b) at a distal end operable to grasp and release a suture needle (180). Distal portions of the first and second needle holders (18a, 18b) extend laterally outward at an angle from first and second longitudinal axes of the elongate shaft (16) to positions where at least a portion of the corresponding needle holding members (18a, 18b) are spaced laterally outward of the peripheral edge of the elongate shaft (16), and the needle holders (18a, 18b) are rotatable about the first and second longitudinal axes of the elongate shaft (16).</p> |
