Trialkyl aluminium compounds and dialkyl aluminium alkoxides are prepared by reacting sodium tetra-alkyl aluminium compounds and sodium trialkyl aluminium alkoxides respectively with aluminium in the presence of mercury. The sodium compounds may be in part replaced by the corresponding potassium compounds. The reaction may be conducted at a temperature between 60 DEG -250 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure or at an elevated pressure of not more than 5 atmospheres, and if desired in the presence of a solvent or diluent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon, an ether or tertiary amine. An excess of aluminium may be employed. The by-product amalgam may be electrolysed to recover the sodium, which in its turn may be converted to sodium hydride which may be further be reacted with a trialkyl aluminium or a dialkyl aluminium alkoxide and an olefin to yield one of the starting materials. The mixture produced comprising 3 mols of trialkyl aluminium and 1 mol of dialkyl aluminium alkoxide may be reacted with an alcohol to give 4 mols of dialkyl aluminium compound. The trialkyl aluminium compound may be separated from the dialkyl aluminium alkoxide by distillation. Specifications 763,284, 770,707, 836,792, 923,651, 946,684 and 955,252 are referred to. |
