PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a large-sized and detailed image visible with a small number of luminescent cells, by driving a group of (m×n) luminescent cells wit the data for (m×n) dots in a certain instant in a band-like physical region. SOLUTION: A central control device 2 reads out data from an image memory 3 in series in the order of individual line data and inputs the data in series to shift register SRi lines connected in series. The line data Dj are inputted to a drive circuit DSi with a delay of five-line portions after the line data Dj are fed to an input terminal IN. A timing generating circuit 4 feeds the data of each line of the image data to the drive circuit DSi of each line in sequence and display-drives 16 LEDs 1 of luminescent cell line according to the line data of 16 bits latched by the drive circuit. When the (i)th luminescent cell line Ai is display-driven by the (j)th line data Dj, the (i+1)th luminescent cell line Ai+1 is display-drive by the (j-5)th line data Dj-5.
