PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device which is small-sized and whose image-quality performance such as brightness is excellent by providing a polarizing means and first and second lens arrays at an illuminating means. SOLUTION: Light from a light source 1 is reflected by an ellipsoidal mirror 2 and a spherical mirror 3, and is changed into parallel beams by a collimating lens 4 having negative refracting power and the parallel beams are made incident on a polarizing beam splitter 5, and transmitted light is separated into P polarized beams and reflected light is separated into S polarized beams, and the P polarized beams are made incident on the first lens array 8, and the S polarized beams are made incident on a total reflection mirror 6. The S polarized beams are reflected by the total reflection mirror 6 and are made incident on the lens array 8. The P polarized beams pass the second lens array 9 and are made incident on a condenser lens 10 after passing the lens array 8. The condenser lens 10 has positive refracting power and has an action to condense the P polarized beams further and the light passing the condenser lens 10 irradiates a liquid crystal display element 11. Thus, the random polarizing directions of the polarized beams from the light source 1 are put in order so as to make the polarized beams incident on the liquid crystal display element 11. |
