The invention relates to ground straw as a construction element or additive for industrial products which are to be disposed of at least predominantly by biological degradation. It serves for the effective reutilisation of renewable raw materials which are obtained as by-product from plant production, for the manufacture of auxiliaries, additives and construction materials which are able if required to undergo ready biodegradation. Ground straw of this kind, in the form of particles containing, in particular, lignin and cellulose, with a length > 0.3 mm and < 30 mm and a width/thickness < 2 mm is produced by the operations of chopping the sections of straw to a length of > 20 mm < 80 mm, followed by grinding and, if desired, by an aftertreatment which involves screening out certain fractions, and mixing. The agricultural crop plants used for manufacturing this ground straw may comprise the dried stalks or stems of, in particular, the cereal plants wheat, rye, barley, oats, maize, triticale, rice and millet, of the oil-bearing fruits oilseed rape, linseed, soya and sunflower, or of the pulse crops peas, beans and lentils.
