摘要 A method and apparatus for cultivating plants having a construction capable of promoting the growth of roots without inviting decay of the roots even when the plants are sufficiently immersed to their roots into a culture solution, supplying sufficient oxygen necessary for the growth of the roots and restricting the occurrence of microorganisms, capable of lowering the cultivation cost to a level competing with the cost of those raised outdoors by utilizing efficiently the rays of light emitted from fluorescent lamps to maximum for cultivation to reduce the electric power cost accounting for the biggest portion of the plant cultivation cost, and capable of preventing the occurrence of thermal defects such as chip-burn by reducing the calory generated from the light source (fluorescent lamps) to minimum. Specifically a method of cultivating plants by using an artificial light source, comprising immersing the roots of plants into a culture solution containing fertilizer components and growing the plants while forcedly pumping the air having a high carbon dioxide concentration into the culture solution continuously during the cultivation, wherein the construction in which the roots of the plants are always immersed sufficiently into the culture solution (54) is used, the fluorescent lamps (16) are used as the artificial light source, the entire inner surface of a plant cultivation room is covered with a reflective layer (6) so as to control the output of each fluorescent lamp, and the plants are grown by minimum necessary light power by using the fluorescent lamps at an output of 30 to 70 % of the rated output.
