Hydromechanical deep drawing where a sheet metal blank (1) is held between two tool halves in the form of a blank holder (4) and a drawing ring (3), and is deep drawn using a punch (2). During this process, the space (7) provided with a seal (5) is subjected to a counter pressure using a pressure medium. The seal in the direction of the blank flange (1.1) is provided with an axial sealing force which is controlled so that, depending on the counter pressure and the force exerted by the blank holder, the space is always reliably sealed. The seal (5) is located in an annular groove, and has a sealing pressure directed towards the blank flange.
