Items are securely stored and retrieved using a storage unit (105) having separate compartments (315). A storage code is provided to the storage unit (105), and the storage unit (105) responds by permitting access to a particular compartment (315) while preventing access to other compartments (315). An item is then placed in the particular compartment (315). At a later time, a retrieval code is provided to the storage unit (105) and the storage unit (105) responds by permitting access to the particular compartment (315) while preventing access to other compartments (315). The item may then be retrieved from the particular compartment (315).
