A method of treating adult-onset diabetes in a mammal in need thereof by administering to the mammal a lectin selected from pokeweed mitogen containing lectin Pa-1 in active form and Momordica charantia lectin in an amount effective to stimulate anorexia and induce hypoglycemia in the mammal. Methods of inducing weight loss and lectin pharmaceutical composition are also disclosed.
