A pillar, in particular a B-pillar, for a vehicle body, in particular a passenger car body, comprises a hat profile beam (12) that has its crown towards the interior of the body. A lower hat profile beam (20) has its crown located within the crown of the beam (12) and the flanges of the two beams are spot welded together. The hinges (30) of the rear door (26) are fixed to the beam (20). The front edge (27) of the rear door (26) swings into the crown of the beam (20) when the door is opened. Thus, the beam (12) has a high crown and utilises the available space efficiently.
