A composition comprising an intimate mixture of a carrier material and an adjuvant which retards the release of active substances from preparations is claimed. The release-retarding properties are preferably provided by the carrier material. Preferably the carrier material is a hydrophilic polymer, especially a cellulose derivative (hydroxypropyl-cellulose or hydroxypropylmethyl-cellulose), polyethylene oxide or a vinyl derivative (e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate or copolymers). Preferably the adjuvant is a filler, especially cellulose or microcrystalline cellulose, a sugar or sugar alcohol, e.g. sorbitol or mannitol, lactose or a Ca salt.
