A method for characterizing samples which contain units, comprising the steps of: a) monitoring intensity fluctuations of radiation emitted, scattered and/or reflected by the units in at least one measurement volume with at least one detection means which is capable of detecting radiation emitted, scattered and/or reflected by said units, b) determining from said intensity fluctuations intermediate statistical data comprising an at least two-dimensional joint statistical function, c) determining information related to a joint distribution of units out of said intermediate statistical data.
