1366221 Carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 3 Jan 1972 [2 Jan 1971] 80/72 Heading C2C Carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene are prepared by reacting in a first reaction stage one or more optionally chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms, and/or one or more optionally chlorinated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, and/or one or more optionally chlorosubstituted aromatic hydrocarbons, with chlorine in excess at a temperature of from 400‹ to 800‹ C. and a pressure of from 50 to 800 atmospheres gauge, then reducing the pressure and adding one or more aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons which may be partially chlorinated and allowing the reaction to proceed in a second reaction stage at a temperature of from 400‹ to 800‹ C. and separating off the carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene formed. The reactants may pass through a pre-reaction stage before the first reaction stage at the same pressure as the latter and at a temperature of from 150‹ to 250‹ C. Any hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons remaining after separation of carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene from the second stage reaction products may be recycled into the first reaction stage. |
