The tyre support, made in the form of a split ring or two or more sectors (10) forming a ring when joined together, is mounted rigidly on the wheel rim (30). The support has an outer surface (50) which extends towards the outer side wall (52) for a sufficient distance to form a stop preventing the tyre from coming off the rim if run flat or under-inflated. Each of the sectors making up the tyre support is asymmetrical in shape relative to the median transverse plane (62) of the rim and has a cross-section in the form of an inverted L-shape. Each sector is solid and made in one piece from a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic resin, e.g. a polyamide reinforced with long glass fibres, and has an outer layer (44) of an elastomer. The sectors can be joined together end-to-end by nuts and bolts to form a supporting ring with a radial dimension equivalent to≥45% of the nominal internal height of the tyre.
