PURPOSE:To stably and noise-reducingly produce a rare-earth metal-transition metal alloy powder for a sputtering target to produce a magneto-.optical recording medium without segregation and brittleness and with the oxygen content of the powder reduced. CONSTITUTION:A rare-earth metal-transition metal alloy for a magneto-optical recording medium is melted, atomized with an inert gas, and powdered to make globular sbape. In this case, the molten alloy is atomized preferably with an inert gas contg. 1-10% hydrogen. Consequently, a rare-earth metal-transition metal alloy powder for a target to produce a magneto-optical recording medium having a particle size distribution as shown in the figure and contg. about 500ppm oxygen is obtained. |
