The unit assists a handicapped person in standing and other body positions by a unit with a mechanical coupling (1) to a wheel chair and having a seat (5) fastened to the housing body (7) to be movable by a drive so as to bring the user into a standing position. In any position, the seat prevents the user from falling back. The seat is preferably adjusted to the same height as the wheelchair seat before transfer and handrails (10) are provided which can be reached when the unit is coupled to the wheelchair. A table (8) is also adjustable in height with the seat.
