<p>In an electric vehicle having left and right wheels 32, 33 driven by electric motors 22, 23 and steered by operating the motors at different speeds, the difference in speed between the motors in response to a steering command, a particular non-zero position of a joystick along an "X" axis (or of a steering wheel, Fig. 12), is set in dependence upon the forward speed of the vehicle (or the requested speed from the joystick "Y" axis or an accelerator position). The forward speed dependence of the speed differential removes or reduces the variation in the radius of curvature with speed for a particular steering command. The variation with speed may also or alternatively occur in reverse. The variation with speed may also operate to reduce the steering sensitivity with speed. The joystick may be in a restricting template which reduces the maximum steering command with speed (Figs 8 to 10).</p> |
