Data blocks to be transmitted in a virtual connection via an ATM network (ATM-N) are inserted into one or more data cells depending on the length. To each of the data cells, a cell type code is attached which indicates whether the respective data cell contains a complete data block, a first section of a data block, a centre section of a data block or a last section of a data block. After the data cells of the relevant virtual connection have passed through the ATM network, their cell type codes are in each case compared with predetermined variable pairs of expected values for these cell type codes.
