Method of and apparatus for mixing gases

Apparatus for mixing gases comprises a chamber 1, preferably spherical, with an inlet 10 provided with means for giving gases fed thereto through conduits 20 and 21 a rotational movement around the longitudinal axis of the inlet and an outlet 11, the wall of the inlet merging smoothly with the wall of the chamber 1 while the transition from the wall of the outlet to the wall of the chamber is sharp. In a modification, the gases to be mixed are fed through an inlet 30 to a hemispherical zone 3 arranged within a larger chamber 4 and are withdrawn through an outlet 11. A third gas may be fed from a tangentially arranged inlet 5 into the annular space between the zone 3 and the lower portion of the chamber 4 and be passed to the upper portion of the chamber 4 as an envelope surrounding the gases supplied to the zone 3. Both forms of the apparatus are particularly suitable for mixing a combustible gas with air for subsequent combustion or combustion within the mixing chamber, the hot gases being passed to e.g. the reaction chamber of a plant used for converting hydrocarbons into a combustible gas.
