PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound capable of rapidly measuring endo type chitinase activity without being influenced by an exo type enzyme by treating a p-nitrophenyl derivative of chitin dimer with a deacetylase derived from a fungus. SOLUTION: This new compound p-nitrophenyl 2-acetylamino-4-O-(2-amino-2- deoxy-β-D-glucopyranosyl)-2-deoxy-β-D-glucopyranoside (salt) is shown by the formula, capable of rapidly measuring endo type chitinase activity without being influenced by a coexisting exo type enzyme and is useful as an enzyme activity measuring substrate having high specificity and sensitivity to enzymolysis manner. The compound is obtained by treating a p-nitrophenyl derivative of chitin dimer with a deacetylase derived from a fungus such as Colletotrichum lindemuthianum ATCC 56,676 strain.
