PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To machine the end face of an optical connector into convex spherical mirror surface with high efficiency. SOLUTION: This machining device consists of a polishing base 3, mechanism for making a polishing tape 2 travel, mechanism 19 for bringing a workpiece 1 and the polishing tape 2 into contact with each other with constant load, mechanism for reciprocating the workpiece 1 longitudinally on the recessed face of the polishing base 3 while rotating the workpiece 1, and mechanism for forming a uniform polishing solution layer on the polishing tape 2. The rotation axis of the workpiece 1 and the center of curvature of the recessed circular arc face on the polishing base 3 are made to coincide with each other to bring both into contact with each other, and while feeding the polishing tape 2 by a motor 18, a chuck rotating motor 13 is rotated to rotate a chuck 6 and to move it parallel in the longitudinal direction of a rack 9. A polishing solution of 50 cc/m<2> to 10 cc/m<2> is fed to a sponge 4 to form a thin, uniform polishing solution layer on the polishing tape 2. The workpiece 1 is pre-machined by rotatory-reciprocating motion, and the polishing tape 2 is then replaced with one with fine grain size to polish in the same way. The end face 8 is therefore machined into smooth convex spherical shape. |
