In a Bowden mechanism for opening and closing windows wherein a tension cable 15 and a surrounding compression member 21 are slidable within an outer sleeve 9, a spring 19 is provided between the end of the member 21 and a sliding block 14 fast with the end of the cable 15 to tension the latter so that the unsupported end of the member 21 is kept straight. The compression member 21 may, as shown, be a helical wire or may be a series of discs or the like. As shown the block 14 is fast with an operating handle 13 and a collar 20 is interposed between the spring 19 and helical wire 21. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the spring and helical wire are integral, the spring being formed by opening out a number of the turns of the helical wire. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the operating handle is replaced by a further Bowden mechanism one end of which is fast with the sliding block. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the sliding block has a toothed plate which extends through the outer sleeve 9 into another Bowden cable and the teeth thereon engage a helical winding on the second cable. The second Bowden cable may operate conjointly two or more mechanisms. |
