<p>Two-tone colour effects are produced in piece-dyed nylon or other synthetic fabrics by employing fibres or filaments of two varieties differing both in cross-sectional shape and delustrant content; they may also differ in dye affinity and molecular orientation. The two varieties may constitute separate yarns to produce two tones disposed in a pattern, or both may be included in some or all the yarns. The yarns may be of staple fibre or continuous filament, or some of each type; or yarns containing both fibres and filaments, e.g. plied or core-spun, may be used. The fabric may be woven or knitted, or the invention may be applied to the pile of a tufted fabric. In the example, a tufted carpet fabric has pile of bulked continuous filament nylon 66; alternate tufting needles are supplied with yarn of quarter-dull trilobal filaments, and the intervening needles with yarns of bright elliptical or circular filaments (which give a darker tone); patterns may be produced by increasing the height of one kind of pile where its tone is required to predominate.
