An optical's ruler (10) having a generally elongated body (11) having at least first and second principal surfaces (12 and 14), a first end (16) and a second, opposing end (18), a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge is provided. An interpupillary distance scale is located on one of the at least first and second principal surfaces of the body. The interpupillary distance scale has indicia at regularly spaced intervals coinciding with standard unit of measure to permit measurement of the distance between the pupils of a subject. A segment height scale is also located on one of the at least first and second principal surfaces of the body. A segment height scale has indicia at regularly spaced intervals coinciding with standard units of measure oriented generally perpendicular to the first longitudinal edge of the body. The optical's ruler may also be provided with a cross member for alignment height scale with the relevant reference point. Alternative, a sliding indicator which includes a cross member can be moved along the segment height scale to accurately measure from the bottom of the lens to the desired reference point on the wearer's eye.
