The adaptive control of a road vehicle system uses an on board radar computer 16, a drive cycle computer 20 and braking control computer 26. All computer modules are linked to a computer module 18 that applies the adaptive control. The distance between a vehicle and a following vehicle in the same lane is predetermined for a given speed. Any reduction in the distance is determined by the radar system and the following vehicle is delayed.
