A length of material for forming a label is drawn from a web of material (13) in a round label forming unit (12), and this length is formed into a round label and separated from the feed web. The round label is then slipped onto the bottle from the top or bottom by a gripper and fixed there by shrinking. The separation of the drawn-off length of material from the feed web takes place before or during the formation of the label.
