The invention relates to a catalytic converter and a method for purifying an exhaust gas flow (1) from a small engine in an unregulated exhaust system. The catalytic converter comprises a first (2) and a second (3) stage. Preliminary purification takes place in the first stage (2), and final purification in the second stage (3). Secondary air (4) flows in an area of the catalytic converter which is located downstream from the inlet into the first stage (2) and upstream from the outlet from the second stage (3). As a result of this directed supply of secondary air (4), the exothermic reaction is homogenized along the path of flow through the two stages (2, 3) of the catalytic converter.
