The alarm system includes a sensor unit (3) with at least one sensor element (30). It generates at least one transmitter signal (51), supplied to the optical path in the vehicle, from the optical transmitted radiation (61). In addition it detects a receiving signal (52), after the passage of the optical distance (5), due to the reflection at the edges (12) and/or openings (11) of the space (1) to be monitored. A central unit (2) is provided, which at least controls the timed expiry of the measuring operations, and from the optical received radiation (62), further processes the measuring signal obtained and/or evaluates this. The central unit (2) and the sensor unit (3) are arranged separated from each other at different mounting points inside the space (1) being monitored. Connecting lines (4) are connected with each other, for the transmission of data signals and/or control signals.
