The tensioning system locks the passenger seat belt when an impact is detected for holding the passenger in the seat. A setting element (1) provides a variable force for tensioning the seat belt in dependence on control signals provided by an evaluation device (2) coupled to an information system (3). Pref. the information system includes a pre-crash sensor, e.g. a radar sensor coupled to a processor, evaluating the radar signals to provide advance warning of an imminent impact.
