The camshaft drive is mounted on the end side (40) of the engine between an output shaft of the engine and the cylinder head housing (1). It is set in two planes (E1,E2) parallel to each other in front of the end side so that a first endless drive (41) in the first plane runs between the output shaft and one of the camshafts (4) to drive a further camshaft (5) via a second endless drive (44) set in the second plane. The second plane is situated between the end side and first plane (E1). The two endless drives are formed as toothed belt drives. A tension device is provided on the end side to act in the second plane on the loose side of the second drive.
