The present invention provides a distributed computer system, the system comprising: a) a multiplicity of components, including at least one of each of the categories of human, data, software, hardware, and each component having a desired level of trust assigned thereto, b) each of the software and hardware components including no more functionality than is required to carry out the desired task, and the internal functions of each of the hardware and software components not normally being accessible externally of the respective component; c) each component having a unique identifying code associated therewith, and one or more communication links between the components through predetermined interfaces requiring the use of the associated identifying codes, including means for encrypting communications between the components.
