A method of detecting whether or not a material has been labelled with a specific taggant, including a nucleic acid molecule, having a predetermined structure establishing the identity and/or origin of the material, comprising associating with the material a microscopically detectable amount of cellular particles such as bacterial and fungal spores and plant pollen, and testing the sample for presence of the cellular particles, a method of labelling a material including associating with it cellular particles, and a thus labelled material.
