A new type of communication which has never been available in the conventional electronic media is established by transmitting anonymous mail which has no destination and no fixed date of transmission. This electronic mail system is provided with electronic mail servers (S), each of which is connected to the Internet INET, and a plurality of electronic mail clients (C). The clients (C) convert the text or graphic data input by a user into the image data in BMP format and then generate anonymous electronic mail which includes the image data and has no specified originators. These mails are accumulated in mail boxes (30) of the servers (S). When another client (C) logs in, one mail is randomly selected and is sent back to the client (C). The mail received by the client (C) is displayed as a bottle which has been washed ashore. Whether or not the mail is displayed is determined in the judgement step which is repeated at specified time intervals.
