Method for reducing the quantity of digital information in a data set for the purpose of pattern recognition, comprising: a) determining digital a priori information values associated with at least one known pattern; b) determining digital information values of first elements associated with a pattern for recognition; c) pairing two or more first elements into second elements, wherein the number of digital information values for each second element is at least doubled; d) for each second element, on the basis of the digital a priori information values, merging a minimum of two digital information values into a reduced second element with a reduced number of digital information values.
