The present invention relates to the use of machine-readable coded markings carried by the articles to identify not only what they are made of but also what colour they are and what they were previously used for (what they contained). The invention proposes that a coded marking could be formed integrally of the article (15) in the form of a sequence (or similar arrangement) of areas (33) having significantly contrasting light reflecting/scattering properties actually incorporated on/in the article's surface, and that this marking be in the form of a modified AZTEC code in which each of the coding elements - the blocks (33) that, together with the "empty" spaces therebetween, define the coded data - is side-by-side contiguous either with the outermost ring (31) of the target (31, 32), or with a block (33) that is so contiguous.
