FIELD: metallurgy, production of strip with hardening of melt on moving surface. SUBSTANCE: proposed method of cooling of molten steel when casting strip includes hardening of at least part of melt pouring out of tip metallurgical vessel with contact with cooling surface in atmosphere of reducing gas stream. Stream of inert gas is directed on to surface of freely accessible liquid steel billet right after its running out of tip of metallurgical vessel, strip is subjected to action of gas atmosphere to its complete through hardening as minimum. Gas is supplied on to surface of steel billet at angle of up to 45 deg in such amount and with such velocity that billet is removed with reduction of cross-section.
