An elastic surface-wave device which is provided with an LiNbxTa1-xO3 film (where 0</=x</=1) on a (012) sapphire substrate and propagates Love waves in the specific direction of the LiNbxTa1-xO3 film as elastic surface waves. It is preferable that the crystallographic axis of the (012) LiNbxTa1-xO3 film (where 0</=x</=1) is in parallel to that of the sapphire substrate and the direction of propagation of the surface waves lies within the range of +/-20 DEG (with respect to the axis perpendicular to the direction of the projection of the crystallographic axis C of the sapphire substrate or the (012) LiNbxTa1-xO3 film, or that the direction of the projection of the crystallographic axis C of the sapphire substrate is in parallel to the direction of the crystallographic axis C of a (100) LiNbxTa1-xO3 film (where 0</=x</=1) and the direction of propagation of the surface waves lies within the range of +/-35 DEG (with respect to the axis perpendicular to the direction of the projection of the crystallographic axis C of the sapphire substrate. A preferable piezoelectric substrate is one having an intermediate layer comprising a metal or metal oxide between the sapphire substrate and the (100) LiNbxTa1-xO3 film (where 0</=x</=1).
