New 7-substituted cycloheptatriene compounds

New 7-substituted cycloheptatrienes of formula (I), (II),(III) and (IV) are claimed. In the formulae, n = 1-6; R = aryl such as phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl or pyrenyl, substituted aryl such as carboxy-, alkoxy- or amino-aryl, 1-20C alkyl or alkoxy (optionally substituted with hydroxy, amino, halogen, cyano or benzyl), amino (optionally substituted with alkyl or aryl), cyano or corresponding sulphur analogues; Nu = 1-20C alkoxy (optionally substituted as above), corresponding sulphur analogues, substituted alcohol groups, aryloxy such as phenoxy, naphthyloxy or anthryloxy (optionally substituted, e.g. with CN or nitro), azido, halogen, -SCN, -NCS, -OCN or -NCO; X, Y = 2-20C alkylene, arylene such as phenylene, -Het1-R1-Het2- (with R1 = 2-20C alkylene or phenylene etc.; Het1, Het2 = O, N or S), -Ar1-A-Ar2- (with Ar1, Ar2 = arylene or R2-arylene-R3 in which R2, R3 = H or 2-20C alkyl; A = -(O-alkylene)m-O-, -(N-alkylene)m-N-, -(N-alkylene)m-(O-alkylene)n-N- or -(O-alkylene)m-(N-alkylene)n-O- with m, n = 1-20), or -D-(alkylene)-E- or -D-(arylene)-E- in which D and E are carboxyl and/or amide groups; Z1, Z2 = -alkylene-B, -(alkylene-O)m-B or -arylene-Het-B (with m = 1-20, Het = O, S or N, and B = a space-filling group such as trityl (optionally substituted) or trialkylsilyl; C = electron-deficient aromatic group such as a pyridinium or bipyridinium ion. Also claimed is a process for the production of these compounds by reacting the corresponding tropylium salts (halides, sulphates, perchlorates, hexafluorophosphates or phosphates) with nucleophiles.
